πŸ› οΈ Setup Guide

  1. Select your variant β€” choose 120KV if you already have a propeller; choose 120KV + DIY Propeller for a complete drive system. Both variants include the motor, ESC, and VX3 remote.
  2. Mount the motor β€” secure the 65162 motor into your foil mast pod or motor mount using the standard M5 screws. Route the 1300mm 8AWG lead wires through the mast or board channel, away from moving parts.
  3. Connect motor to ESC β€” plug the 3Γ— 8.0mm gold bullet connectors from the motor into the ESC phase outputs (A-B-C). Rotation direction can be reversed in VESC Tool β€” no rewiring required.
  4. Connect water cooling β€” attach the FD75200's water cooling inlet and outlet tubes to your board's water cooling circuit. Ensure water flows through the ESC before powering on at high current.Β 
  5. Connect battery β€” use a high-current connector rated for 120A+ (Firduo 120A–250A waterproof connector recommended) on the 10AWG power cable. Use an anti-spark switch or pre-charge resistor to prevent connector damage. Verify battery voltage is within 14–75V.
  6. Connect VX3 receiver to ESC — for UART mode: connect receiver TX→ESC RX, receiver RX→ESC TX. Power receiver from ESC 5V BEC. For PPM mode: connect receiver signal wire to ESC PPM input.
  7. Configure via VESC Tool β€” connect FD75200 via USB. Run motor auto-detection wizard, set current limits (200A continuous max), configure throttle curve, and set protection thresholds. Our support team can provide a pre-configured file for the 65162 + FD75200 combination on request.
  8. Water test at low power β€” start at 20–30% throttle in calm water. Verify smooth motor operation, check water cooling flow, and confirm all connections are dry before increasing to full power.

❓ FAQ

Q1: What battery do I need, and is it included?
The battery is not included. The FD75200 ESC supports 14–75V (3S–16S). For eFoil and high-power builds, a 12S–16S LiPo or Li-ion pack with minimum 120A continuous discharge is required for full-power operation. A 13S (54.6V) pack is the most common choice for eFoil builds. Ensure your battery has a high-current connector rated for 120A+ and a BMS capable of sustaining the discharge rate.

Q2: Do I need to configure the ESC, or does it work out of the box?
The FD75200 ships with default VESC settings that will work for most builds, but we strongly recommend running motor auto-detection in VESC Tool before your first water session. This calibrates the ESC to the exact parameters of your 65162 motor for optimal performance and protection. Connect via USB (included with ESC), run the detection wizard, and save. Our support team can provide a pre-configured setup file for the 65162 + FD75200 combination on request.

Q3: Is the water cooling required, and how does it work?
Yes β€” the FD75200 uses active three-pipe water cooling and must have water flowing through it during high-current operation. The ESC draws water from your board's water intake (typically a small hull fitting) and circulates it through the ESC cooling channels. Without water cooling, the ESC will overheat at sustained high current. At low power (testing, slow speed), brief operation without cooling is acceptable, but always ensure cooling is active before full-power riding.

Q4: What propeller should I use, and is the DIY propeller suitable for eFoil?
The optional DIY propeller included in the 120KV+DIY Propeller variant is a 7-inch propeller suitable for initial testing and lower-speed applications. For optimized eFoil performance, we recommend the Firduo 162mm 2-Blade Folding Propeller β€” designed specifically for the 65162 threaded shaft with a low-drag folding design for efficient gliding.Β 

Q5: Can I use this kit for an electric skateboard or non-water application?
The VX3 remote supports ESK8 mode and the FD75200 VESC ESC is compatible with any BLDC motor within its voltage and current range β€” making this kit technically usable for high-power electric skateboard, e-bike, or other VESC-based builds. However, the water cooling system on the FD75200 is designed for marine use. For air-cooled applications, consider the Firduo FD200 Aluminum Case ESC instead.The 65162 motor requires water cooling for continuous operation; otherwise, it will affect motor efficiency or even damage the motor. If used in non-underwater environments, it is strongly recommended to install a water cooling circulation system.
