πŸ”— Compatible Builds & Recommended Pairings

πŸ› οΈ Setup Guide

⚠️ No BEC β€” receiver/remote must be powered separately from a standalone 5V BEC or receiver battery.

  1. Verify voltage compatibility β€” confirm your battery is within 5S–12S LiPo (18.5V–50.4V). Do not exceed 12S β€” overvoltage will damage the ESC. For eFoil builds, 10S–12S is the recommended range for the 65162 motor.
  2. Connect power wires β€” solder the 8AWG red (+) and black (βˆ’) wires to your battery leads or bus bar. No connector is pre-installed β€” use XT150, AS150, or the Firduo 120A–250A waterproof connector for high-current connections. Use an anti-spark switch or pre-charge resistor to prevent connector arcing.
  3. Connect motor phase wires β€” solder the three motor phase wires to your brushless motor phase outputs (A-B-C). If the motor spins in the wrong direction, swap any two of the three phase wires β€” no ESC reprogramming required.
  4. Connect water cooling β€” route the 4.6mm cooling pipe from your board's water intake (below waterline) through the ESC cooling channel and back out. Ensure no air pockets in the line and water flows freely before powering on. Secure hose connections with clamps.
  5. Connect signal wire β€” plug the JR male signal wire (white = signal, black = ground, 300mm) into your receiver's throttle channel. Power the receiver separately from a 5V BEC β€” the Sea Lion 200A has no BEC output.
  6. Program the ESC β€” use the LCD Program Card (sold separately)Β to set battery type, cell count, low voltage cutoff, drive direction, and throttle range. Calibrate throttle endpoints with your remote before first use.
  7. Water test at low power β€” start at 20–30% throttle in calm water. Verify smooth motor operation, check water cooling flow (ESC should remain cool to the touch), and confirm all connections are sealed before increasing to full power.

❓ FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between the Sea Lion 200A and the Sea Lion 120A?
The Sea Lion 200A delivers 200A continuous / 360A burst and is designed for high-power builds using the 65162 motor (6KW) at 10S–12S. The Sea Lion 120A delivers 120A continuous / 240A burst and is suited for lighter builds using the 65111 motor (2KW). Both share the same 5S–12S voltage range and 105Γ—48Γ—23mm form factor. Choose 200A for the 65162 motor; choose 120A for the 65111 motor.

Q2: Does the Sea Lion 200A have a BEC? How do I power my receiver?
No β€” the Sea Lion 200A has no BEC output. You must power your receiver or remote receiver separately using a standalone 5V BEC connected to your battery, or a small receiver battery pack. Connect the BEC output to the receiver's power input, and connect the ESC signal wire (JR male) to the receiver's throttle channel. Do not attempt to draw receiver power from the ESC signal wire.

Q3: Is water cooling mandatory, or can I run it air-cooled?
Water cooling is strongly recommended and is the primary thermal management method for this ESC. At 200A continuous, the ESC generates significant heat that cannot be dissipated by air alone. Running without water cooling at high current loads will trigger over-heat protection and may permanently damage the ESC. Always ensure water flow through the 4.6mm cooling pipe before powering on for high-current operation.

Q4: Does this ESC work with sensorless brushless motors?
Yes. The Sea Lion 200A is designed for sensorless brushless motors, which is the standard for eFoil and RC boat applications. It uses back-EMF detection for smooth startup and throttle response. It is optimized for the Firduo 65162 MotorΒ but is compatible with any sensorless brushless motor within its voltage and current rating.

Q5: Can I use the Sea Lion 200A with a VESC-based remote like the VX3?
The Sea Lion 200A uses standard PPM signal input β€” it is not a VESC-based ESC and does not support UART communication. TheΒ VX3 Remote supports PPM mode, making it compatible with the Sea Lion 200A for basic throttle control. However, UART telemetry features (motor power, MOS temperature display on VX3 screen) will not be available. For full UART telemetry, use a VESC-based ESC such as theΒ Manatee 100 VESC.
