🛠️ Setup Guide

1. Choose your kit — select KIT-1 if you have a custom motor mount or mast pod; select KIT-2 for the complete Thruster unit with propeller, guide cover, and base included.
2. Mount the motor / thruster — secure the 65162 into your foil mast pod using M5 screws. For KIT-2, attach the fixed base to your mast or board mount. Route the 1300mm lead wires through the mast channel, away from moving parts.
3. Connect motor to ESC — plug the 3× 8.0mm gold bullet connectors into the Manatee 100 phase outputs (A-B-C). Use 120A Waterproof Connectors for a sealed, high-current connection. Motor rotation direction can be reversed in VESC Tool — no rewiring required.
4. Connect ESC to battery — use the included XT90 connector. Add a 200A Anti-Spark Switch between battery and ESC to prevent connector arcing. Verify battery voltage is within 40–75V before connecting.
5. Pair the VX3 remote — insert the receiver into the Manatee 100 PPM port. Power on the ESC, then hold the VX3 power button until pairing is confirmed on the display. Set operating mode to E-surf mode for cruise control support.
6. Run motor detection in VESC Tool — connect the Manatee 100 via Micro USB and run the motor auto-detection wizard in VESC Tool 3.01. This calibrates the ESC to the 65162 motor parameters. Contact our support team for a pre-configured setup file for this kit combination.
7. Seal all connections — the Manatee 100 cable terminations are not waterproof. Apply self-amalgamating tape or waterproof sealant to all exposed connection points before water use.

Q1: What's the difference between KIT-1 and KIT-2?
KIT-1 includes the 65162 motor with phase wires — ideal if you have a custom motor mount or mast pod and want to integrate the motor yourself. KIT-2 includes the complete 65162 Thruster unit (motor + JP120 propeller + C120 guide cover + fixed base + screws) — a ready-to-mount underwater propulsion unit for builders who want a complete drive assembly.

Q2: Is a battery included? What battery do I need?
No battery is included. You need a 12S–16S LiPo or Li-ion pack with a minimum 150A continuous discharge rating. A 14S (51.8V nominal) pack is the most common choice for this kit, balancing power and motor efficiency. Ensure your battery connector is rated for 150A+ and add an anti-spark switch to protect the ESC on connection.

Q3: Is the Manatee 100 ESC waterproof? Do I need to seal it?
The Manatee 100 is water-cooled but its cable connection points (phase wires, battery leads, signal cables) are not waterproof. You must seal all exposed terminations with self-amalgamating tape or waterproof sealant before water use. Waterproof connectors are recommended for both the live wire and power cord. The Manatee 100 is designed to be waterproof to a depth of 5 meters.

Q4: Can I use the VX3 remote with other ESCs, or only the Manatee 100?
The VX3 is compatible with both VESC-based and non-VESC ESCs via PPM or UART. It works with any ESC that accepts a standard PPM signal. For UART-based telemetry data (motor power, MOS temperature) on the VX3 display, the ESC must support VESC UART protocol — the Manatee 100 is fully compatible.
