Firduo Moray Dual Drive VESC System Wiring Overview Dual Motor Control

πŸ› οΈ Setup Guide

  1. Verify voltage compatibility β€” confirm your battery is within 3S–13S LiPo (12V–54.6V). For dual-motor surfboard and kayak builds, 10S–12S is the most common range. Do not exceed 13S (54.6V) β€” overvoltage will damage the system.
  2. Connect motor phase wires β€” connect the 6Γ— 12AWG motor cables (250mm, 3 per motor) to your two brushless motors. Each set of 3 wires controls one motor independently. Rotation direction can be corrected by swapping any two phase wires per motor, or via VESC Tool motor direction setting. Test rotation direction at low throttle before installing propellers.
  3. Connect battery cables β€” solder or connect the 10AWG battery cables (750mm Red/Black) to your battery. No plug is pre-installed β€” use a high-current connector rated for your total system current (60A+ continuous for dual-motor). The Moray has a built-in anti-spark switch β€” no external anti-spark device is required.
  4. Connect water cooling β€” attach the 6mm–4mm water cooling pipe to your board's water intake circuit. Ensure water flows through the Moray before running at high current. Secure hose connections with clamps to prevent leaks.
  5. Connect VX3 receiver (UART mode) β€” connect the VX3 receiver COMM cable to the Moray's 7P COMM line (PH2.0 connector). Power the receiver from the Moray's 5V BEC output. UART mode enables full telemetry on the VX3 display (motor power, MOS temperature, GPS). Alternatively, connect via the 3P PWM line for standard PPM throttle control.
  6. Configure via VESC Tool β€” connect via USB (600mm cable included) or Bluetooth (built-in) to VESC Tool. Run motor auto-detection for each channel independently. Set current limits (30A continuous per channel recommended), configure throttle curve, and set protection thresholds. Contact our support team for a pre-configured setup file for the 56115 or 65111 motor combination.
  7. Power on sequence β€” press the push-button power switch to power on the Moray. The 12mm red LED indicator will illuminate. Power on the VX3 remote and verify receiver binding before applying throttle.
  8. Water test at low power β€” start at 20–30% throttle in calm water. Verify smooth dual-motor operation, check water cooling flow, and confirm all cable terminations are sealed before increasing to full power.

❓ FAQ

Q1: What is the Moray, and how is it different from a single VESC ESC?
The Firduo Moray containsΒ Dual-drive VESC 4.20 controller in a single waterproof enclosure. Each channel independently controls one brushless motor with its own current sensing, motor detection, and parameter settings. This allows precise dual-motor control for twin-thruster surfboards, kayaks, and marine robotics β€” without the complexity of wiring two separate ESCs. A single battery connection, single water cooling circuit, and single remote connection control both motors simultaneously.

Q2: Can I control the two motors independently (differential thrust / steering)?
Yes β€” the two VESC channels can be configured for independent or synchronized control via VESC Tool. For synchronized dual-motor operation (both motors at the same throttle), connect both channels to the same PPM or UART signal. For differential thrust steering (left/right independent control), configure each channel to a separate signal input. Contact our support team for configuration guidance for your specific build.

Q3: Is the Moray compatible with the VX3 waterproof remote?
Yes. The Moray supports UART input via the 7P COMM line, which is fully compatible with theΒ VX3 Waterproof RemoteΒ in UART mode. UART mode enables full telemetry on the VX3 display β€” motor power, MOS temperature, GPS, and throttle progress bar. The Moray's 5V BEC powers the VX3 receiver directly. PPM mode via the 3P PWM line is also supported for standard RC receivers.

Q4: Does the Moray have a built-in anti-spark switch? Do I need an external one?
Yes β€” the Moray has an integrated anti-spark switch built into the PCBA. No external anti-spark switch or pre-charge resistor is required. The push-button power switch controls the anti-spark circuit β€” always use the power button to connect/disconnect the system rather than plugging/unplugging the battery directly, to protect the connector contacts from arcing.

Q5: What motors are recommended for the Moray dual-drive system?
The Moray is rated for 30A continuous per channel. The 56115 150KV Motor is the primary recommended motor for dual-drive surfboard and kayak builds at 10S–13S β€” its 2.4KW peak power is well-matched to the Moray's 30A/channel continuous rating. TheΒ 65111 Motor is also compatible for lighter dual-motor builds at 10S–12S. Run motor auto-detection in VESC Tool for each motor before first use.
